Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and Smoke Inhalation

It is recommended that patients with severe CO poisoning, those with neuropsychological changes and those in high risk group be treated with HBO irrespective of their COHb levels. HBO at 2.5 ATA reduces the half-life of carboxyhaemoglobin from 4 to 5 hours in subjects breathing room air to 20 minutes or less. Timely adminstration of HBO prevents neuronal injury, prevents delayed neuropsychological sequel and terminates the biochemical deterioration.
